June 20, Tuesday — Maryland’s Mt. St. Mary’s University head coach Tom Gravante will be replaced this fall after serving at the helm of the Division I program for 28 years.
“The Mount” sits about an hour northwest of Washington, DC, and roughly the same distance from Baltimore, and is one of the smallest universities in Division I with an undergraduate student body of approximately 1,700. Its home in the town of Emmitsburg may be most (quietly) famous for its proximity to nearby Camp David, the rural retreat of presidents for the past 70 years.
Gravante is a 1988 graduate of Hobart College and was a member of a Statesmen squad that won four consecutive NCAA DIII National Championships as part of a 12-year run of consecutive championships.
The Mount won eight regular season and tournament championships under Gravante while competing in the Northeast Conference, and he was the longest-tenured men’s Division I coach at one institution. A two-time cancer survivor, Gravante is a spokesperson for the Headstrong Foundation, which provides support to families impacted by the disease.
A week prior to the announcement, the Mount announced the hiring of incoming athletic director Brad Davis, who will begin in his new role on August 1.
